Cyclone Soccer Camps
Assistant Coach Ben Madsen
Ben Madsen is entering his third season as assistant soccer coach at Iowa State after a four-year stint on the University of South Alabama staff. Madsen assists in all the technical and tactical aspects of the ISU soccer program, while working with the Cyclone goalkeepers.
In his first campaign at Iowa State, Madsen worked with goalkeepers Ann Gleason, who set the ISU career marks for shutouts and minutes played, and Ashley Costanzo, who made 12 saves to preserve a 0-0 double-overtime draw with 15th-ranked Colorado.
"Ben had the opportunity to take the lead with the team this spring for a few weeks while I was away for the birth of our second child,” ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “He and volunteer assistant coach Megan Kerns really stepped up and challenged the players to reach beyond their comfort zone. As a staff, we have built a great dynamic with the team pulling all the pieces together into a cohesive unit.”
While at South Alabama, Madsen helped lead the Jaguars to the Sunbelt Conference tournament during his four seasons and coached the first-team all-league goalkeeper in 2004.
Prior to South Alabama, Madsen was an assistant at Alabama-Huntsville for one season. He has also been an assistant at Lincoln College (Ill.).
Madsen worked with the Alabama Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2004-2008 and was the goalkeeper director at Mobile Soccer Club. He holds an NSCAA Advanced national diploma and an NSCAA National Goalkeeping diploma. Madsen currently coaches for the Ames Soccer Club.
Madsen was a three-year starter as goalkeeper at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. where he holds the career saves record. In 2001, Madsen was named team Most Valuable Player and received all-Gulf South Conference honors.
Madsen will marry his fiancé Ann Brown in May 2010.
